PowerFlex

Flexibility for your power electronics

Ideal for combinations of screw and Faston flat connectors in conjunction with low weight requirements

PowerFlex Powerelements are the high current contacts from Würth Elektronik ICS with flexible press-fit pins. They combine cost efficiency with flexible press-fit pins and are the optimum connection for standard flat receptacles and flat blades, e.g. Faston contacts. They can also be used as corner connectors to connect two PCBs.

Depending on the layout, currents of up to 400 Amps are possible.

Processing options for PowerFlex Powerelements

FPFT (Flexible Press-fit Technology)

Flexible press-fit technology uses flexible pins pressed into an electrically through-plated hole in the PCB. Unlike the massive press-fit technology, the pin is deformed instead of the PCB. There are many options for the shape of the pin. For example, the "needle eye" is very popular. Note, that the gas-tight contact is limited to the deformation zone of the pin.

PCB design

PCB must be designed in accordance with the latest edition of IPC A 600. In the case of flexible press-fit technology, the PCBs must be designed in accordance with the Würth Elektronik ICS Press-fit Specification. Special attention should be paid to drill diameter and copper thickness.

Processing PowerFlex Press-fit

Processing PowerFlex Press-fit

The flexible pins of PowerFlex Press-fit Powerelement are press-fitted into an electrically through-plated hole in a PCB. During the press-fit process, a gas-tight connection is created, primarily by deforming the pin is deformed. The contact area is limited to the deformation zone of the pin and may limit the maximum current carrying capacity.

Processing instructions

  • Use only appropriate press-fit tools.
  • For Powerelements with bolt, the upper punch must be recessed by the dimension of the bolt. Pressure on the bolt must be eliminated.
  • For flat surface Powerelements, a simple full-surface top punch will suffice.
